Ngorongoro Crater · Tanzania
From the volcanic soul of the Ngorongoro Crater to your cup. Taste the earth. Taste the sun. Taste the story.
Our Origin
Nestled on the sun-drenched foothills of the Ngorongoro Crater, the most iconic landscape on Earth, Karatu Coffee Estate Limited is where the air is thin and the light is golden. The soil is volcanic and rich, born from ancient lava flows that shaped this breathtaking region.
Every cup carries the identity of this extraordinary place — its altitude, its minerals, its ancient geological character. This is terroir in its truest form.
Four stages. A thousand years of knowledge. One extraordinary cup.
Deep beneath the earth, natural aquifers feed fresh, cool underground springs. No chlorinated water, no treated reservoirs — just pure, oxygen-rich water that has never seen the surface, the same water that quenches the crater's wildlife.
Cherries rest in carefully controlled fermentation tanks where natural yeasts and enzymes do their silent work. We don't rush this — we let the beans breathe, collaborating with nature to develop deep, complex flavors without interference.
Coffee cherries are spread on raised wooden beds under the vast African sky. The sun, gentle and steady, draws out moisture while beans retain their natural sugars. The clean, dry crater air allows an even, patient drying — the traditional art of sundrying.
Every batch is roasted to a medium roast — the sweet spot where natural flavors fully express themselves. Our small-batch roaster lets us watch each batch approach its peak, ensuring every bean reaches its perfect moment of transformation.
